Properties When stored for relatively long periods Boron trifluoride-Tetrahydrofuran can turn dark in color without losing its application-related properties. On dilution with water, hydrolysis ensues with liberation of tetrahydrofuran. A corrosive, highly acidic mixture of boric acid, hydroxyfluoroboric acids and tetrafluoroboric acid is produced. The vapors released into the air are corrosive. Due to its catalytic properties Boron trifluoride-Tetrahydrofuran reacts with numerous organic compounds.

Storage and transport The product must be stored cool and dry in tightly sealed container or tank in a cool, dry place. Storage tanks must be drained at regular intervals, washed out and inspected. Tanks that have been washed out must be refilled only when they are completely dry. When stored or transported in pressure-resistant tanks the product can be kept under an atmosphere of dry nitrogen.
Applications For selective reaction control in numerous organic reactions, primarily as a catalyst or cocatalyst. It can be easily dosed with gear pumps or membrane pumps.
Examples of its uses in the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries include: dimerization trimerization oligomerization polymerization rearrangement alkylation acylation carbonylation ring closure reforming of paraffins upgrading of lubricants and many others.
Safety Toxic. Corrosive. During the handling of these products the data and reference in the safety data sheet are to be considered. In addition the necessary caution and good industrial hygiene while handling chemicals have to been kept.
